How the Paint Calculator Works
Wall Area=Perimeter × Height (always converted to m²)
Deductions=(Doors × 1.85 m²) + (Windows × 1.4 m²)
Coated Area=Net Wall Area × Coats
Paint Required=Adjusted Area ÷ Coverage Rate
Cost=Litres Needed × Regional Price per Litre
All wall areas are calculated in m² internally. The calculator converts ft inputs before calculating. Full paint calculation guide →
FAQ
Paint Calculator Questions
Measure wall perimeter and ceiling height. Subtract 1.85 m² per door and 1.4 m² per window. Multiply remaining area by number of coats, then divide by your paint's coverage rate (~10–12 m² per litre). Add a 5–10% waste buffer.
Economy emulsion: ~10 m² per litre. Standard: ~11 m². Premium: ~12 m². Porous walls (bare plaster, freshly sanded) will give lower actual coverage than the manufacturer states.
Two coats for most rooms and colour changes. One coat for same-colour maintenance repaints. Three coats when painting a light shade over a very dark colour, or after a mist coat on new plaster.
Optionally yes — enable the "Include ceiling painting" checkbox and enter your ceiling dimensions. Ceiling area is added to total and factored into the paint and cost estimate.
UK and Australia sell paint in litres; US and Canada sell in gallons. The calculator shows both so you can use whichever unit your supplier uses.
