Step 1: Measure Your Room
Accurate measurement is the foundation of any flooring estimate. Use a tape measure and record in the units used by your supplier (sq ft in the US/Canada, m² in the UK/Australia).
- Rectangular rooms: Length × Width = Area
- L-shaped rooms: Divide into two rectangles, calculate each, then add together
- Irregular rooms: Break into rectangles and sum all areas
💡 Always measure the longest points in each direction, including alcoves and bay windows. Under-measuring is the most common reason homeowners run out of flooring mid-project.
Step 2: Choose Your Flooring Type
Material cost varies significantly by type. Using 2026 US national averages:
- Vinyl Plank: $3.50–$4.50/sq ft — most affordable, fully waterproof
- Laminate: $4.00–$5.50/sq ft — durable, wood-look finish
- Ceramic Tile: $3.50–$6.00/sq ft — ideal for wet areas
- LVP: $5.00–$7.00/sq ft — premium waterproof option
- Engineered Hardwood: $6.50–$11.00/sq ft — stable over concrete
- Solid Hardwood: $8.00–$14.00/sq ft — classic, refinishable
Step 3: Calculate Waste Allowance
You will always need more flooring than your measured area. Standard percentages:
- 10% — standard rectangular rooms (default in calculators)
- 12–15% — L-shaped rooms or rooms with alcoves
- 15–20% — diagonal installations or herringbone/chevron patterns
Formula: Order Quantity = Measured Area × (1 + Waste%)
💡 Always buy in whole boxes. Never order the exact measured area — you will run short.
Step 4: Understand Regional Pricing

Step 5: Full Project Cost
Materials are only part of a flooring project. A complete estimate includes:
- Materials: Flooring + waste allowance (covered by calculator)
- Underlay: $0.50–$2.00/sq ft
- Installation labour: $3–$8/sq ft depending on type and region
- Threshold strips: $2–$8 per doorway
- Subfloor preparation: Variable — can add $2–$10/sq ft
💡 Rule of thumb: Total installation cost typically runs 1.4–2× the material cost alone.
Calculating Boxes Needed
Formula: Boxes = ⌈(Area × (1 + Waste%)) ÷ Box Coverage⌉
Common box coverages: Laminate/LVP ~20 sq ft · Tile ~10 sq ft. Always buy one spare box for future repairs — manufacturers change dye lots.
